If you are opening, or newly operating, a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, or other short term stay lodging in St. Charles County, you will need to register with the St. Charles County Convention & Sports Facilities Authority and pay the 5% St. Charles County room tax.
In November 1992 the voters of St. Charles County authorized a 5% tax on rooms for transient guests in St. Charles County. This tax applies to any hotel, motel, inn, bed and breakfast, and any other lodging furnishing sleeping rooms to transient guests (RSMo. §67.1158) in St. Charles County.
Effective your first day of operation you are required to charge to your guests, and pay to the St. Charles County Convention & Sports Facilities Authority “the Authority”, the 5% tax on all charges paid by the transient guests for all sleeping rooms you provided to such guests.
To register your facility, you will need to complete and file a Registration / Ownership Information Form with the St. Charles County Convention & Sports Facilities Authority. A form can be found on this website’s Resources and Forms page. Complete this form as soon as possible and have it notarized. Mail the completed form to:
St. Charles County Convention & Sports Facilities Authority
PO Box 858
St. Charles, MO 63302 To report and pay your taxes, you must complete a Sleeping Room Tax Report form and submit it along with your payment. A form along with detailed instructions for its completion, can be found on this website’s Sleeping Room Tax page. If you need additional forms, you may print out the forms from our website or call 636-896-1830.
Room taxes are due quarterly, but may be paid monthly. Interest at 2% per month and penalties of 1% per month begin to accrue on the unpaid balance, if not paid within 30 days following the end of the calendar quarter. You must file a Report even if you had no sales for the period. If you have zero sales for the filing period, simply insert “0” on the revenue line of the Sleeping Room Tax Report form, and submit the completed Report as indicated on the form.
If you are using an online platform to book rooms, such as Airbnb, Evolve, Home Away, VRBO, etc., you must still file your Authority Sleeping Room Tax Report for those platforms sales and show any taxes that were actually paid by the platform for the period.
No person or group is exempt from paying sleeping room tax. The Authority has limited its tax collection to room charges for guests only during the first thirty-one (31) consecutive days of their stay at the taxed facility. The Authority will not require the payment of the 5% tax for that guest’s stay beyond the thirty-first (31st) consecutive day of that guest’s stay at that facility.
